Exam pattern

100 MCQs · 100 marks · 150 minutes · 20 questions/20 marks in each of Mental Ability, English, Science, Social Science and Mathematics. One mark per correct answer, no negative marking. All five subjects must be attempted; 6/20 is required in each. Exam: 10 April 2027. Extended application deadline shown on the portal: 15 October 2026.

Stream-wise merit: out of 60

  • Science: Mental Ability + Science + Mathematics.
  • Commerce: Mental Ability + Social Science + Mathematics.
  • Humanities: Mental Ability + Social Science + the highest-scoring subject among the other three.
  • Vocational: Mental Ability + the two highest-scoring subjects among the other four.
  • Alongside 6/20 in every subject, the prescribed aggregate qualifying minimum out of 60 is 21 for General/OBC boys, 20 for General/OBC girls and 18 for SC/ST/Divyang candidates. These are qualifying thresholds, not guaranteed selection cutoffs. NVS may modify criteria as stated in the prospectus.

    unseen discursive passage including vocabulary; case-based passage with visual information such as statistical data and charts.

  2. Grammar (10 marks)

    tenses, modals, subject–verb concord, reported commands/requests/statements/questions, determiners, spelling and syntax. Accuracy of spelling, punctuation and grammar is assessed in context.

Mathematics — 20 marks

  1. Real numbers

    fundamental theorem of arithmetic; irrationality of √2, √3 and √5.

  2. Polynomials

    zeros and their relationship with coefficients of quadratic polynomials.

  3. Pair of linear equations in two variables

    graphs, consistency, number of solutions, substitution, elimination and situational problems.

  4. Quadratic equations

    standard form, real roots by factorisation/formula, discriminant and nature of roots, applications.

  5. Arithmetic progressions

    nth term, sum of first n terms and applications.

  6. Coordinate geometry

    graphs, distance formula and internal section formula.

  7. Triangles

    similarity, proportionality theorem and its converse; AA, SSS and SAS similarity criteria as specified in the prospectus.

  8. Circles

    tangent perpendicular to the radius at contact; equal tangents from an external point.

  9. Trigonometry

    acute-angle ratios, standard angles, relationships and sin²A + cos²A = 1 with simple identities.

  10. Heights and distances

    elevation/depression at 30°, 45°, 60°; problems involving no more than two right triangles.

  11. Areas related to circles

    sectors, segments, perimeter/circumference; segment-area questions limited to central angles 60°, 90°, 120°.

  12. Surface areas and volumes

    combinations of any two of cube, cuboid, sphere, hemisphere, right circular cylinder or cone.

  13. Statistics

    grouped-data mean, median and mode; bimodal situations excluded.

  14. Probability

    classical definition and simple event-probability problems.

Science — 20 marks

  1. Chemical reactions and equations

    balancing, combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement, precipitation, endothermic/exothermic changes and oxidation/reduction.

  2. Acids, bases and salts

    properties, indicators, neutralisation, pH and everyday applications; sodium hydroxide, bleaching powder, baking soda, washing soda and plaster of Paris.

  3. Metals and non-metals

    properties, reactivity, ionic compounds, basic metallurgy and corrosion prevention.

  4. Carbon compounds

    covalent bonding, versatile carbon, homologous series, nomenclature, reactions, ethanol/ethanoic acid, soaps and detergents.

  5. Life processes

    nutrition, respiration, transportation and excretion in plants and animals.

  6. Control and coordination

    plant responses/hormones; nervous system, voluntary/involuntary/reflex actions and animal hormones.

  7. Reproduction

    sexual/asexual reproduction, human reproduction, reproductive health, family planning and safe sex/HIV awareness.

  8. Heredity

    Mendelian inheritance and sex determination. Evolution is excluded in the prospectus.

  9. Light

    spherical mirrors/lenses, image formation, refraction, refractive index, lens power; human eye/vision defects, prism, dispersion and scattering. Sun colour at sunrise/sunset is excluded.

  10. Electricity

    current/potential difference, Ohm’s law, resistance/resistivity, series/parallel circuits, heating and electric power.

  11. Magnetic effects

    magnetic fields around conductors/coils/solenoids, force, Fleming’s left-hand rule, DC/AC and domestic circuits.

  12. Environment

    ecosystems, environmental problems, ozone depletion, waste and biodegradable/non-biodegradable substances.

Social Science — 20 marks

  1. History

    The Rise of Nationalism in Europe; Nationalism in India; The Making of a Global World; The Age of Industrialisation; Print Culture and the Modern World.

  2. Geography

    Resources and Development; Forest and Wildlife Resources; Water Resources; Agriculture; Minerals and Energy Resources; Manufacturing Industries; Lifelines of National Economy.

  3. Geography exclusions

    the “State of India’s Environment” box; impact of globalisation on agriculture; specified industry–market linkage and cotton/jute/sugar, iron/steel and cement industry content. See the prospectus for exact excluded text/figures.

  4. Democratic Politics

    Power Sharing; Federalism; Gender, Religion and Caste; Political Parties; Outcomes of Democracy. The prospectus excludes specific visual items in Gender, Religion and Caste.

  5. Economics

    Development (goals, income, comparisons, public facilities, sustainability); Sectors of the Indian Economy (primary/secondary/tertiary, organised/unorganised, public/private); Money and Credit (banks, loans, credit terms, formal credit, self-help groups); Globalisation and the Indian Economy (production, trade, integration, enabling factors, WTO, impacts and fair globalisation).
